Make 5% = 50%

According to a study of more than 18,000 women, switching just 5 percent of the protein you eat from animal-based to vegetable-based decreases your chance of ovulatory infertility by 50 percent. A great source of such protein is beans, and as the weather begins to cool down, you can try this hearty fall chili.

Chili Decreasing Infertility

Red Bean Chili

  • 2 tablespoons olive or canola oil

  • 1 onion, diced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1 can (28 ounces) diced or crushed tomatoes

  • 3 cans (14.5 ounces each) pinto or red kidney beans

  • 2 teaspoons rice vinegar

  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

  • 1 to 2 teaspoons chipotle chile purée

1. Heat the oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the onion and garlic and stir frequently until onion softens, about 5 minutes. Stir in the spices and salt and cook for 1 minute more. 2. Add the tomatoes, beans, and 1 cup water; bring to a boil. Cover, reduce the heat, and simmer for 20 minutes to blend the flavors, stirring occasionally. Stir in the rice vinegar, cilantro, and chipotle purée to taste.
