Do You Need Motivation When It’s Chilly?

When it’s beautiful and sunny, or even as the weather turns cloudy and cool, it seems an easy choice to exercise – go for a walk, a bike ride, or even chasing the kids around at the park. But when the damp, icy winter air sets in, motivation as well as opportunity seem to hit a low. Here are some ideas to get you and your family moving this winter.

Keep It Going

  • Dance party: One of the best calorie-burning activities, dancing can serve to both work up a sweat and make you feel good about life. Plus it can help you practice busting a move for any holiday parties you’re attending!

  • Check out indoor sports: Ice skating, bowling, basketball, and rock climbing all have indoor facilities and regularly scheduled open times.

  • Commercial breaks: We know there are so many good shows back in season (at least for another week or two), and as it gets darker earlier, we all seem to spend more time on the couch. Make a plan to get up every commercial break and do an activity of your choice, like push-ups, sit-ups, or lunges.

  • Workout DVDs: Famous fitness names like Tracy Anderson and Jillian Michaels have an endless collection of easy-to-do-at-home workout DVDs. Make a time in your calendar to commit to the exercise at least 3 days each week, and reap the benefits of your clothes staying fit well through the holiday season.

Try polling some of your friends, particularly the ones who seem to make time to stay active throughout the year. You might find many of them have found creative solutions to balance their responsibilities with their health in ways you never would have thought of!
