Holiday food is certainly full of more calories than, say, that baby spinach salad you made for lunch. But, there are perhaps surprising benefits to many of our traditional noms for the holiday. Turkey is a lean animal protein, excellent in small quantities. Pumpkin and carrots can improve sperm motility and morphology. Potatoes have the ability to keep your blood sugar stable, which can help since spikes in your blood sugar levels can harm your fertility. Many holiday veggies such as squash and green beans also help to keep your blood sugar levels steady, while whole grain foods can add folic acid to your system, important in preventing birth defects.
But it’s the berries we’re most concerned about today. Blueberries (pie, anyone?) and cranberries host antioxidants to keep the quality of your eggs at peak. So give this recipe for the always-present cranberry sauce a whirl to boost your fertility while you munch.
Relish the Cranberries
1 large apple, unpeeled, halved, and cored
½ navel orange, unpeeled and seeded
2 cups cranberries (thawed)
½ cup walnuts
¼ cup sugar
In a food processor, one at a time, pulse the apple, orange, cranberries, and walnuts until finely chopped. Combine; stir in sugar. Refrigerate up to three days. (Source: Martha Stewart)
