Who's the Real You?

With January comes New Year’s resolutions. And resolutions can be wonderful, but not if they’re aiming to mask who you really are. While we all need to change our bad habits and should strive to live healthily, we also need to learn to be OK with who we are. That doesn’t sound like conflicting advice, right?

Who you are at your core – your passions, purpose, and values – should be something you nurture and grow over time. It’s only those external habits such as eating practices and emotional health that can (and sometimes should) be changed.

So how do you discover what is part of your core? Explore activities you enjoy, moments you’ve gotten very upset and what upset you, and some of your dreams. Those should point you toward character traits you value, what your passions are, and where you want to head in life.

Embrace Yourself

Now that you can identify the parts of you that make you who you are, work on learning to love those parts of you. Even if they’re what some people perceive to be negative, think about how you benefit from it. For example, some might perceive you as arrogant, but if you channel that into unassuming confidence, it can be a great way to move forward in your career, learn new things, and shine as a leader. Or you might be seen as too sensitive, but it means you have the compassion to see people in need and do something about it.

Learning that you don’t have to change everything about yourself can be a big step. Don’t underestimate the importance of valuing who you are.
