Keeping our hearts healthy is certainly important physically, but we also know that our hearts can take a beating when we face infertility. Whether we try to avoid it or immerse ourselves in it, our emotions go through a rollercoaster ride.
Even if we don’t realize it consciously, our body and emotions are probably responding to grief – from not being able to quickly conceive, to not understanding why, to losing a baby, to the endless frustration of a process with ups and downs.
Our emotions can result in lack of energy, headaches, insomnia, melancholy, and lack of focus. While emotional distress is unavoidable, the best way to manage it is often to work through it, rather than ignore or try to circumvent it.
The Emotional Stages of Facing Infertility
Denial, shock, or numbness. This isn’t happening to me-style. It will pass in time.
Anger, from feeling vulnerable and having lack of control. Use physical activity, talk to a counselor, or write down your feelings to help work through them.
Guilt and shame follow senses of inadequacy. These feeling will come, and over time, only the acceptance of yourself with the talents and the failures will help.
