Can Food Affect Your Emotions?

We know we should eat right for our body and to help with trying to have a baby. But did you know we should also eat right to help manage our emotional health? Our emotions can definitely be affected by the kind of nutrition we’re getting (or not getting!). Here’s a list of some things to know.

 

  1. Antioxidants: These can reduce the occurrence of free radicals in the body and strengthen our immune systems. They also have been associated with reducing anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Find them in oranges, strawberries, peppers, tomatoes, peanut butter, vegetable oils, and spinach

  2. Carbs: Believe it or not, meals eaten with higher levels of carbohydrates result in feeling relaxed and calm, resulting in feeling happier and only mild cases depression, sleep issues, and poor concentration. But this doesn’t mean eat multiple doughnuts every day. Aim for more fruits, veggies, brown rice, corn, and quinoa.

  3. Omega-3 fatty acids: These can help reduce the risks of cancer, arthritis, and heart disease. Studies are not yet conclusive, but the nutrient might also be important to help decrease depression. Find omega-3 in salmon, walnuts, romaine lettuce, squash, and dark green leafy vegetables.

  4. Folic acid: Deficiencies have been associated with depression, and getting enough helps in red blood cell formation and keeping the nervous system healthy. Low levels can be associated with depression, irritability, mental fatigue, and insomnia. Food sources include spinach, asparagus, broccoli, beets, bell peppers, tomatoes, black beans, and strawberries.

  5. Calcium: Not only does it keep your bones healthy, but it also helps your blood vessels and hormones. Deficiencies can cause anxiety, agitation, depression, and insomnia. Aim to have dairy sources such as milk, cheese, and yogurt, but also soy, black beans, salmon, broccoli, and fortified orange juice.

 

So eating the right foods can keep your emotions balanced as well as prepare your body for conception.
