How is Fitness Connected to Fertility?

May 16, 2016

This month is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. How does that relate to your fertility, you might ask? That’s a good question.

.

Studies have shown that getting 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day can help improve the odds of fertility. Whatever kind of exercise you choose, the results will be certainly help your heart, your metabolism, and your waistline. And in keeping the rest of your body healthy, your reproductive system can function better!

.

You’ve probably also heard that exercise can negatively impact your fertility. How can that be the case too? Studies that have investigated athletes and found that their risk for infertility has been increased by the intense training they undergo on a daily basis. So exercise is good for you, but too much of a good thing could impact your fertility.

.

But fitness means more than exercise. It means finding those activities you enjoy that are good for your heart and your soul. It means spending time doing healthy things with your friends – hiking, biking, a pick-up volleyball game, etc. It means paying attention to your body’s signals so that you take a break when you need to, and you take time for yourself when you need to. It means finding nutritious foods you enjoy, maybe taking some cooking classes, and learning to add the right amount of flavor to keep your body energized and healthy. It also sometimes means eating a burger or a milkshake for the tastiness, so long as it’s only every once in awhile. And fitness means making sure you’re paying attention to what your spirit needs – some time alone, a weekend away, or even just an after work happy hour or an evening pedi.

.

So while you make sure you’re making time for exercise on a regular basis, make sure you’re prioritizing other kinds of fitness as well!
