It’s summer, season of light foods and barbecue. The never ending juicy, fresh fruit you can buy at local markets is the best. ever. With all the light eating, it can be hard to get fat that’s good for you (instead of, you know, another burger!). Enter one of the superfoods of fertility: the avocado. This shapely little fruit provides tons of folic acid, a boost to you and your man’s fertility as well as important in neural formulation in the earliest days of pregnancy. And the “good fat,” or monosaturated fat, helps to regulate your hormones, a very important part of helping you conceive. Recently, a study showed that those who eat avocadoes regularly had three times the likelihood of conceiving with IVF!
Alton Brown’s Perfect Guacamole
3 Avocados, halved, seeded, and peeled
1 lime, juiced
½ teaspoon of kosher salt
½ teaspoon of ground cumin
½ teaspoon of cayenne
½ medium onion, diced
½ jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced
2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced
1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
1 clove garlic, minced
In a large bowl, place the scooped avocado pulp and lime juice, tossing to coat. Drain and reserve the lime juice after all of the avocadoes have been coated. Using a potato masher, add the salt, cumin, and cayenne and mash the mixture up. Then, fold in the onions, jalapeño, tomato, cilantro, and garlic. Add 1 tablespoon of the reserved lime juice. Let the guac sit at room temperature for about an hour and then serve!
