Tired of the Same Old Workout Routine?
The days are starting to go down in temperature, making it much more bearable to get sweaty outdoors. There are so many great activities you can engage in this time of year for a quality workout while enjoying the beautiful countryside or our revitalized urban areas. So lace up those sneakers, put on your favorite workout leggings, sports bra, and tunes, and head outside!
Hiking: There are many, many hiking trails all over this region. Check out state parks or sites like trailrunners.com to find some great ones near you.
Biking: The backroads of our region are a wealth of beautiful, slow-building hills perfect for cycling. Grab your helmet, some water, and a friend or two and you can spend ages riding through the country.
Kayaking/Canoeing: There are several boat launch areas on the Susquehanna, as well as many lakes and ponds in the area. Retailers like Shank’s Mare offer guided kayak trips and rentals, and state parks such as Codorus have rentals as well.
Rail trail runs or walks: Whether you like to keep a clipped pace per mile or leisurely make your way around, this region is criss-crossed with many rail trails, paved over along rivers and towns.
Park workouts: Head to a local park and do your workout there. The large grassy areas and benches make it easy to do sprints, jumping jacks, pushups, tricep dips, and lunges galore!
Free weights: Use your own backyard and a medium-weight set of free weights for a body training workout. Check out YouTube for whichever muscle group you’d like to focus on.
Front porch yoga: Lay out your mat on the porch and work through your favorite poses, toning and relaxing while enjoying your neighborhood!
Stadium stair runs: Head to your local school track or football field and run stairs and around the track for a workout that will definitely work your muscles!
These types of workouts can be done outside for the next several weeks as the air turns crisp and a bit chilly!
