I Carry Your Heart Craft

When we lose a little one before they’re even born, it’s a special kind of grief. Since you had hopes and dreams more than memories and moments with your little one, the journey of grief can be even harder. Many people find solace in crafts to remember their little one by. This craft allows you to work with your hands, find a quote that resonates with you to read every day, and make something you can hold in your hands as often as you like.

A Rock for Your Baby

Tools needed:

  • A smooth rock that fits in your hand. Can be from a craft store or from a local creek bed

  • Some acrylic paint

  • Paintbrushes – small tips for ease in writing words

  • Sealer – Delta Ceramcoat, or any clear acrylic sealer

  • Water for rinsing your brushes

Before you get started, you need to decide what quote to paint on your rock. Here are a few suggestions:

I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart). -e. e. cummings

Loved. Lost. Remembered.

A piece of my heart lives in heaven.

I’ll hold you in my heart until I can hold you in heaven.

There is no footprint so small that it does not leave an imprint on this world.

Once you’ve picked one of these quotes, or any other short one that speaks to you, you’re ready to go. Lightly pencil the quote onto your rock, and then use your small-tipped brush to trace the penciled words on the rock. You can add personal details, such as the EDD of your little one, or some tiny flowers or hearts around the edges. Give everything a second coat, and maybe a third if it looks like it needs it. Let the paint dry for several hours, and then coat the whole top of the rock with sealer. After 24 hours, your rock will be all dry and complete. You can keep it somewhere you can see it all the time, such as your dresser or desk at work, or put it in a special, out-of-the way place, or in your garden. Every time you pick it up, you can remember your lost baby – with pain, but also with the joy of the memory.
