Exercise it Out

The holiday season can be stressful, for sure, with crowds and shopping and busy activities. If you’ll be spending a lot of time with friends and family, it can be even more stressful if you’re trying to conceive a baby. People might ask you about it, or you might just feel the weight on your shoulders from seeing other babies and little ones.

One of the best ways to beat stress is to exercise. And it’s not so bad for your health and body either! Study after study shows that exercise can have a huge impact on our minds. This is good for overall mental health in that it reduces fatigue, increases alertness, and improves brain function. But that can also mean a big difference in anxiety levels and how you feel about any infertility struggles you face. Overall, it reduces your muscle tension and secretion of stress hormones.

Aim for 30 minutes of moderate working out every day. It will help you sleep better, give you more confidence in yourself, and actually help you relax throughout the day. If you know you should exercise, or you used to, but aren’t sure how to get up and going again, try these tips.

How to Begin

  • Talk to your doctor. If you have any specific health issues, they can make recommendations to not aggravate those factors. Or they can give you a simple plan to get started.

  • Set a goal you can reach. Dropping 30 pounds is admirable, but it’s much easier (and you’ll have more success) to have smaller, paced goals. For this stressful time of year, how about just take a walk for 20 minutes every day, and then do crunches during 10 minutes of TV. Or make a plan to go for a jog every day after work or after dinner. Hit the goal for a week and give yourself a reward!

  • Try to have fun. If you hate running, aim for a different kind of fitness. Try a workout class with a friend, swim, or use a YouTube video to practice some yoga. Exercise gets a bad rap for being boring and tiresome, but many people enjoy their workouts.

  • Bring a buddy. You don’t have to have the same fitness goals, but you can definitely spur each other on. Even if you just make a plan to text each other when you’re going to workout, it can help you hold each other accountable.

  • Do something different. It doesn’t have to be different every time you workout, but if you find yourself getting bored, you can mix it up.Maybe go for a chilly hike, ice skating, or find some bodyweight workouts you can do at home in your comfy clothes.

Helping your body to be more healthy and feel better will in turn significantly impact your mental coping skills and stress. It’s worth a try this year to have a holiday season better than ever!
