What You Don’t Know About Endometriosis

You might have heard that endometriosis is often a cause of infertility. But what is it, really? What things that you’ve heard about it are true? Which of the things you’ve heard are myths? For Endometriosis Awareness Month, we want to make sure you know what the real story is.

Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue grows outside of the uterus, causing pain during your period and at other times. It’s hard to diagnose and can be tricky to treat as well, often requiring surgery.

Facts About Endometriosis

  • About 176 million women suffer from endometriosis

  • It is not caused or influenced by lifestyle choices

  • About half of women with endometriosis also have pain during intercourse

  • The disease is just as common in younger women and teenagers as it is in older women

  • Endometriosis cannot be cured by hormonal treatments, although the symptoms can be subdued while taking medication

  • Pregnancy does not cure endometriosis

  • Endometriosis is not when the uterine tissue grows outside of the uterus, but rather, when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside of the uterus

  • Being diagnosed with endometriosis does not mean you can never have children

  • Even if you have a hysterectomy, it might not cure endometriosis

  • If you’ve had an abortion, that wasn’t the cause of any endometriosis

If you have severe pain during your period, you might suffer from endometriosis. And if you’re trying to conceive a baby while having that condition, there are specific actions you should and should not take.
