Hibernation = a Win. And So Does a Baseball Cap.

I love me some sun. Sitting on the beach, hearing the waves crash and ebb, crash and ebb. Or driving along with my sunroof open. Or sitting on my deck, cold glass of iced tea in hand, as sunlight and shade dapple across my chair.

But as much as I love the sun, I know how important it is to keep my skin away from its harmful rays. And how important best practices around the sun can be for women who want to conceive a baby.

If you love to be sun-kissed, remember that the sun also contains harmful rays. Studies show that radiation in sunlight can affect folic acid, which helps a fetus grow during pregnancy. Too much sunlight breaks down that folic acid in your body, which can affect a baby’s growth in the womb. High levels of sun exposure provide both complications in pregnancy and lower conception rates in women.

Now, I’m not saying you should hibernate all summer – although if you hate the heat, go for it in some nice AC. But if you are going to be out in the sun: gear up with floppy hats or ball caps, sunscreen on all exposed skin, and avoid the sun during the most intense times of the day. Summer should be enjoyed, but we want to keep your body ready to nurture a little one well.
