At the end of the day, all you need is hope and strength. Hope that it will get better, and strength to hold on until it does.
An apple a day keeps the doctor away, so the saying goes. And in September, apples are plentiful!!
But apples aren’t the only thing you can eat to keep your body healthy and ready to conceive.
This week, we’re sharing nutrition tips for conception, detailing the different phases of your menstrual cycle, and what you should/should not eat during each!
To eat: focus on getting enough iron and protein as your body loses both during this time. Stock up on meat, beans, fish, and leafy green vegetables. The anti-inflammatory properties in fish and the greens can help with cramping as well. Eating Vitamin C-rich foods can also help, as they’ll ensure your body absorbs the iron you’re eating. Good sources of Vitamin C are bell peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, kiwi, and citrus fruits.
Not to eat: cold foods and alcohol can make your periods more painful than they already are. Caffeine and spicy food can make your bleeding heavier—yuck.
As your body can have too much estrogen just after your period, it can be helpful to eat foods that metabolize it well. Try to include veggies like cauliflower, broccoli, kale, and cabbage. Also fuel up on nuts, seeds, legumes, eggs, and fish to help with follicle development.
Not to eat: Avoid alcohol, as it can affect your hormones, and its dehydrating effect can thicken your cervical mucus and inhibit sperm.
To eat: B Vitamins are your friend right now, as they help release your egg and encourage it to implant. Essential fatty acids, including omega-3s from fish can help the egg release as well and increase blood flow to the uterus. Add in leafy greens, whole grains, eggs, legumes, meat, fish, and tons of water. Water is the key to moving hormones to where they need to be, as well as thinning out your cervical mucus to keep sperm well on their way.
Not to eat: Processed foods, meat, and acidic foods can make your cervical mucus too thick for sperm.
To eat: Nutrients that encourage cell growth include beta-carotene, found in carrots, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, and leafy greens. They will help keep your hormones balanced and prevent a very early miscarriage. Pineapple has also been shown to support implantation. Include warming foods such as stews during this time as well, as higher temperatures can help any implanted cells stay put.
Not to eat: cold or raw foods, such as ice cream and frozen yogurt, as cold can be constricting.
This might seem like a lot, so in general, trying to eat fresh, healthy foods you could find at a market will be better than processed items. Lots and lots of vegetables and fruits, as well as healthy proteins can really benefit your body.
