Some days you just have to create your own sunshine.
As the holiday season arrives, it can be tough to navigate. The many personalities and perspectives, all thrown together for a few days is tough in itself. Throw in the tension of infertility you might be facing during holidays crammed full of child-centric activities and it may seem even worse. You’re not alone. As many as one in six couples faces infertility, and it’s a tricky topic to navigate with overbearing or curious family. To help you get through it, here are some ideas:
Plan ahead with a prepared answer in case someone asks about when you’ll be having children. Something generic is fine, such as: “I’ll let you know when we’d like to talk about it.”
Choose wisely for which celebrations you want to go to, especially if there will be young kids or pregnant mothers there. If it’s too difficult, no need to go.
Plan out timing – maybe rather than spending the night, arrive just before a meal so you might not have to be around children for as long if its painful.
Spend time with couples or friends who don’t have kids. Maybe even do things you couldn’t do with kids in tow!
Start a new tradition with your significant other – like going on vacation by yourselves over a holiday.
I’ve been at holidays where you can tell someone is hurting, but they don’t want to talk about it. And I’ve been at holidays where family is a little too pushy in trying to talk about it. You can certainly protect yourself by making decisions to make the holidays easier.
