You are not weak just because your heart feels so heavy.
The pain was unexpected.
I remember the first time I heard a story about someone facing infertility.
It was a family friend, and while I knew infertility existed, it seemed to sort of exist in a different universe than mine. It didn’t seem tragic, just separate. A different path that some face – some families prefer pets to children, some couples have families bursting with little ones, some families choose to have an only child, and some folks can’t have children. Infertility seemed like just one of several situations.
I had never seen the heartache when I came upon our friend talking to my mom in the kitchen. Not being able to have children of course isn’t a choice people make, it’s something they can’t control. In fact, 1 out of 8 women experience infertility issues. Many don’t even find out about it until they’ve already been trying to have a baby, with the desire in their hearts growing day by day and then crushed.
I saw our friend overwhelmed after months and months of trying and disappointment. And while there was hope, the hope still comes with the burden of having pain to get through – baggage you’ll carry while putting your trust in someone to help you realize a dream that has often become the biggest, most important dream of your lifetime. The pain I felt listening to her share her story was raw.
Facing infertility can be full of heartbreak. Seeing our friend in my kitchen that day inspired me to dedicate my life to turning that pain into joy.
